Day one can stay light: arrival, Ponta Delgada, south coast or transfer. Day two can focus on Sete Cidades and the west. Day three can follow Lagoa do Fogo, Ribeira Grande and the centre if the ridge is clear. Day four can be Furnas, food, fumaroles and thermal water. Day five can become Nordeste, whale watching or the day you use to recover anything weather moved.

Where to stay for five days

One good base is usually simpler than moving every night. Ponta Delgada is easiest, while the south coast can feel calmer and still practical. Splitting accommodation can work for slow travellers, but it should reduce driving rather than add another logistics task.
